Research and practice: the BLE at Agritechnica

At this year's Agritechnica, the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE) will be presenting new research results from BMEL project funding together with project managers. From equipment systems for energy-saving straw chopping and ultra-flat tillage to drone sensor technology and optimised mobile housing concepts for hens: there is much that is new in practice.

How modern technology can support farms - on a national and international level - in their work will be demonstrated by the Project Management Agency BLE together with experts from funded projects at various stands at Agritechnica in Hannover. The BLE simultaneously provides advice on funding opportunities for agricultural practice, enterprises and research and knowledge transfer institutions.

From the Programme to promote innovation, interested parties can find out about a digital maintenance assistant for mounted implements in agriculture. In the ʺSMART-PTOʺ project, a team of researchers is developing a cardan shaft that is placed between the tractor and the mounted implement. A sensor records the activity of the machine to plan maintenance activities according to actual operating hours.

The transnational EU research network ICT-AGRI-FOOD focuses on digital technologies along the value chain of agricultural and food systems. From these, the BLE presents projects, among others the SHEET project, in which hazard forecasting models for heat damage in fruit growing are being developed and made available in a mobile application for smartphones.

The BLE Office for digitalization demonstrates how drone sensor technology works, which is being put to the test in the DIWAKOPTER trial field for agricultural applications. 3D point clouds are generated from LiDAR sensor data to map the crop in detail and, in a further step, to derive demand-oriented maps for cultivation.

Agricultural enterprises can also learn first-hand about funding opportunities offered by the Federal Programme to enhance energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions in agriculture and horticulture.

The BLE also provides interesting information for organic farms. At the stand of the BLE Project Management Agency, visitors can find out about funding and further training opportunities under the Federal Scheme for Organic Farming (BÖL). Examples of such innovations will be shown at the stand of the University of Kassel (hall 24, stand D22): an optimised mobile housing concept for hens and electrically powered small devices for mechanical weed control. Further eco-research results will be discussed in the technical programme. The BÖL finances the contributions within the framework of ʺknowledge transfer and technical events relating to organic agriculture and the food industryʺ.

Digital trial fields, hall 24, stand E10

The initiatives ʺDigital trial fields in agricultureʺ will show at a joint stand which digital technologies are being researched and how their suitability for practical application is being put to the test. The focus will be on various sensor and remote sensing technologies, drone applications, agricultural robotics, methods for data management and exchange, and the transfer of findings to agricultural practice.

At the Federal Information Centre for Agriculture (BZL) everything revolves around the topic of ʺdiverse crop rotationsʺ, their positive effects on biodiversity and nutrient management, as well as their contribution to climate adaptation. Visitors will find comprehensive information material and can get to know the topic of crop rotation via an interactive matching game. In addition, some surprising facts will be presented at the stand in the popular hands-on activity ʺFunFacts from agricultureʺ.

Medallist ʺGrinderʺ, hall 27, stand E05 / hall 24, stand A20

On 12 November, the ʺGrinderʺ project, supervised by Innovation Promotion and Landwirtschaftliche Rentenbank, will be awarded the silver medal of the DLG Innovation Awards for its innovation ʺGrindStarʺ. In this joint project, a tillage implement system for energy-saving straw chopping and ultra-flat tillage is being developed. Visitors can take a look at the complete system in hall 27, stand E05. A tool and the measuring technology will be on display in hall 24, stand A20.
