History of the Workshop

In the 1950s, many European leaders of rural youth associations expressed the desire to establish a permanent training centre for the mutual exchange of experiences and ideas. Finally at a meeting of representatives of FAO, UNESCO and WAY (World Assembly of Youth) on 22 July 1960 in Paris, Germany agreed to organize an international seminar for rural youths.

Since the first workshop in 1962, all twenty-four International Workshops have been held in Herrsching (near Lake Ammersee in southern Germany). Over the last 52 years more than 1,795 participants from 149 countries have been elaborating concepts for sustainable rural development and agriculture.

Under the patronage of the FAO countless important ideas for initiatives to improve rural youth work have been put into practice over the past decades. Leaders of rural youth associations receive useful inputs at the workshop, which is organized by the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE) and set up under the conceptual guidance of the Education and Training Centre of the Bavarian Farmer’s Union in Herrsching.
