Biological diversity forms the basis of the agricultural, forestry, fishing, and food industries.
The objective is to maintain these industries, to manage them sustainably, and to innovatively continue their development.
Biological diversity (agrobiodiversity), which is so essential to food and agriculture, comprises farmed and wild animals, plants, mushrooms, and microorganisms for use, as well as beings which are important for the agro-ecosystem.
On behalf of the Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture (BMEL) the BLE acts as the project initiator for various promotion measures in the field of biological diversity. Furthermore, various transversal programmes relating to the topic of "biological diversity" are promoted.
