BMEL Announcement: Innovative approaches to process local food in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia

Funding of research projects by German, African and Southeast Asian partners on the topic "Innovative approaches to process local food in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, which contribute to improved nutrition, as well as qualitative and quantitative reduction of losses".

In 2016, the BMEL published the second research announcement entitled "Processing - Innovative Approaches to Process Local Food in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia", as part of the funding instrument "International Research Cooperation for Global Food Security". The announcement places emphasis on investigating innovative processing approaches for different types of food in order to contribute to improved nutrition as well reducing both qualitative and quantitative nutrient losses.

The funded research consortia developed processing solutions to improve the preparation of healthy meals. The applied processing techniques extended food shelf life and ensured food safety, while retaining a high level of nutrients in processed foods and reducing seasonal food insecurity.

Funded Projects

  1. UPGRADE_Plus – Decentralised processing of rarely used plant and animal raw materials into innovative products with high added value to improve the nutritional situation in West Africa
  2. FruVaSe – Year-round availability of fruit and vegetables through resource-efficient processing and new marketing opportunities as instruments for rural development in Sub-Saharan Africa
  3. PROCINUT – Processing edible insects for improved nutrition
  4. WALF-PACK – Application of new packaging solutions to reduce food losses in West Africa by extending the shelf life of perishable, local food
  5. VegiLeg – Implementing innovative processing technologies for nutrient-dense plant foods (African indigenous vegetables and legumes) to safeguard perennial nutrition security– an East African and Southeast African country comparison
  6. AflaZ – Development and implementation of sustainable strategies to improve food-safety and retain nutritional values by reducing fungal infestation and aflatoxin contamination in the food-chain in Kenya as model region for Sub-Saharan Africa
  7. SolCoolDry – Development of Milkfish (Chanos chanos) and Kimarawali (Stolephorus delecatulus) Solar Drying-Cooling Technology, Value Addition and Quality Assurance
  8. BAOQUALITY – Quality improvement and more efficient utilization of products derived from the baobab tree (Adansonia digitata L.) to enhance food security and nutrition in Sub-Saharan Africa
