BLE Tasks in Connection with Fisheries
The BLE is responsible for the implementation of the Common Market Organization in Fisheries, for the management of the national catch quota and for establishing an index of commercial designations for fish species. In addition, the BLE, on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, manages three fishery protection vessels and three fishery research vessels.

Fisheries
The BLE is responsible for the implementation of the Common Market Organization for Fisheries, for market observation and price reporting, for supply and needs analyses and also for fishery matters relating to external trade. Catch Regulation
Another responsibility of the BLE is the management of national catch quota and, in this context, the issuance of catch permits.
Vessel management
The BLE, on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, manages three fishery protection vessels and three fishery research vessels. The former fulfil tasks in connection with fisheries inspection, with the coast guard coordinating consortium and with the Maritime Security Centre. The latter are being used by the fishery research institutes with the Johann-Heinrich-von-Thünen-Institute and by the Max-Rubner-Institute for research on fishery resources and catch technical examinations.
Fish Labeling
Pursuant to the Fischetikettierungsverordnung (Fish Labeling Regulation) of 15 August 2002 (Federal Law Gazette/BGBl. I p. 3363), the BLE is responsible for establishing, managing, and updating an index of commercial designations of fish species.
Fisheries Monitoring and Inspection
Fisheries monitoring and inspection presently include the latest regulation for the determination of mesh size and the assessment of twine thickness of catch nets.
