The BLE supervises the implementation of the European Union's regulations for organic farming and organic food. It is also responsible for the German quality seal Bio-Siegel and for the information system organic-standards.info.

In Germany, the BLE is the authority competent for the implementation of the sustainability criteria laid down in Directive 2009/28/EC on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (Renewable Energies Directive).

The BLE intends to face the major challenges of the international community regarding food security for a growing global population. For this reason, BLE increases its commitment in this area and established the project group "International Cooperation and Global Food Security." in October 2010. This project group pools various activities of BLE in the field of international cooperation .

The BLE controls the compliance with marketing standards of different horticultural and agricultural products, which are traded in Germany and the European Union or imported and exported. This quality control focuses on fruits and vegetables, bananas, dried grapes, hops, eggs and fishery products. The BLE also organises the biannual International Meeting on Quality Control of Fruit and Vegetables.

The BLE has already equipped several fishing vessels with the electronic logbook. Ships with a length of more than 24 meters have been equipped with priority. The equipment of the smaller vessels (12 m to 24 meters overall length) will be in the very near future.

To improve the free movement of goods within the European Union, Product Contact Points have been set up in the Member States. The purpose of these Product Contact Points is to facilitate access to the national market for economic operators of other Member States.
